I’m a firm believer that you don’t need a special occasion or holiday to pop a bottle of bubbly! To some, the idea of pairing a Champagne or sparkling wine with cheese seems strange, but it’s actually a delicious combination. The bubbles not only elevate the flavors of the cheese, but help to cut through the richer, higher butterfat cheeses. For this post, we are going to stick to Champagnes and sparkling wines like Prosecco, and leave the sparkling Roses, Moscato, and such for another post!
Champagnes and sparkling wines pair very well with dense and rich cheeses, such as triple-cremes, as well as their cousin the double-creme cheeses. Brie, Camembert, Mt Tam, and Brillat Savarin are all delicious and simple choices to serve with your bubbly. Mild and creamy goat’s milk cheeses make a delicious pairing as well. Some soft, pungent cow’s milk cheeses pair well with Champagne and sparkling wine also, but may require a more mature vintage to stand up to the flavors. Another thing to remember is the less Brut a Champagne or sparkling wine is, the better it balances saltiness in a cheese.
