It’s that time of year again. Warm days, cool nights, colorful leave, and Fall seasonal beers! There are three major types of seasonal beers released in the fall: pumpkin beer, fresh hop pale ales, and Oktoberfest. All three pair deliciously with relatively the same cheeses.
Often brewed with real pumpkin, pumpkin beers, are generally slightly sweet, rich, and spicy in flavor. Therefore, try pairing this type of beer with Alpine cheeses, such as Aged Gruyere or Raclette. If you’re a blue cheese lover, try a Roquefort or Blue d’Auvergne.
Fresh hops pale ales are made with hops that aren’t dried before brewing, giving it deep flavors. Try pairing this cheese with something creamy or nutty. St. Albray, Camembert, Fontina, or Asiago are all delicious choices.
My personal favorite, Oktoberfest beers, are the strongest of the fall seasonal beers and have rich, complex, spicy and malt flavors. Nutty flavored cheese, such as Gruyere, Fontina, and Aged Gouda are safe choices. If you want to get adventurous, I’d even try a Smoked Gouda!
