We are all about truffles here at Vineyard Market, so back towards the beginning of the year when we tried this cheese, we instantly knew that it had to be a feature! Just in time for the holidays comes Piccolo Truffle. Produced by the same geniuses that make our other popular truffle cheese, Moliterno al Tartufo, Piccolo Truffle is a delight for all. Hailing from Sardinia, an island in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Italy, this young sheep’s milk cheese is littered with large pieces of truffle shavings. That’s right, not truffle oil, not truffle paste, not even little tiny pieces–TRUFFLE SHAVINGS! This small one-and-a-half pound wheel is aged between 30 and 60 days by the time it gets to us here in the US.
Piccolo Truffle has a smooth but bold, slightly rich flavor with a punch of strong, earthy truffle that can be found in the Moliterno al Tartufo. Because it is much younger than the Moliterno al Tartufo, Piccolo Truffle does not have the same sharpness to it and has a much creamier mouthfeel. You don’t even need a cracker for this cheese, I enjoy just cutting off little slivers and eating them by themselves! Just pour yourself a nice glass of Deloach Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and enjoy!
