Mull of Kintyre Extra Mature Cheddar – June Cheese of the Month
The first official day of Summer is right around the corner, and I don’t know about you, but I’m super excited! June is always one of my favorite months–the warm weather is in full swing, just in time for graduations and Father’s Day. For such a lovely month, we also bring you a lovely new cheese here at the Bottle King Vineyard Markets: Mull of Kintyre Extra Mature Cheddar.
Within the first few days of having the cheese in our fridge here at the Glen Rock store, many customers have seen it and immediately recalled the song by Paul McCartney, “Mull of Kintyre.” So what exactly is a Mull of Kintyre? Kintyre is the gorgeous peninsula in southwest Scotland; the Mull of Kintyre is simply the peninsula’s southwestern-most tip. Paul McCartney named his song in its honor because of the land he owned and admired there. Our cheese of the month, however, is named for its production in a creamery there.
Campbeltown Creamery has been making cheeses in Scotland since 1923, and after tasting their products it’s easy to see why! With a mild climate, the Mull of Kintyre provides Cambeltown Creamery with the perfect area for dairy farming, allowing them to continue to craft their cheese with their traditional recipe and time-honored methods by collecting milk from local dairy herds.
A gorgeous ivory color, the Mull of Kintyre Extra Mature Cheddar looks inviting and smells mildly sweet yet tangy. Aged for an extensive period, it develops a firm texture and complex flavors; it’s mellow, yet rich, savory, and creamy. Take another bite and you can detect a little nuttiness with a hint of sweetness. An incredible cheese to taste on its own, easy to pair with fruits and crackers or a good crusty bread (always my favorite), and a delight to include in food dishes; this new June Cheese of the Month is a sure winner.
